How To Transfer Your iWeb Site From One Computer To Another

11 Comments Tips and Tricks, Tutorials

A few of you have been asking about how to transfer your iWeb site from your old computer to your new one, so I decided to put a quick tutorial together. It’s really easy to transfer your site, but this video tutorial will at least give you a visual of where to find the necessary file. So without further adieu:

If you need to transfer your iWeb site from one computer to another, you can follow these steps to easily do so.

The first thing you must do, is open up Finder, and go to your username, and find the folder called Library. I am running Lion so as you can see, my Library folder is not visible. If this is the case for you, this is how we find the folder.

With the Finder window still visible, click on Go in the menu bar, and then select Go To Folder. Type in exactly what you see here which is the squiggly dash, also known as a tilde, slash library. Then press the Go button.

You should now be in your Library folder. Next, highlight Application Support, and then find the iWeb folder. Inside the iWeb folder, you will see a file called Domain.sites2

Select this file and copy it.

Now you can transfer this file to your other computer using whichever method you prefer. Place this file back in the exact same location on the other computer, launch iWeb, and you should now see the website in iWeb.

Quick iWeb Web Hosting Update

7 Comments Tips and Tricks

I know I’ve mentioned this in a previous post, but I just wanted to bring to everyone’s attention that RAGE Web Hosting has reduced its pricing on iWeb web hosting. You can now have your site hosted for as little as $5/month. I’m not sure how long this price is going to be here so I would sign up as soon as you can. You will also receive a free license to iWeb to WordPress after you sign up. Simply send them an e-mail after you have made your purchase and let them know you would like a serial number to iWeb to WordPress.

So for those of you who don’t know what the heck I’m talking about, I will elaborate. MobileMe will be discontinued in just a few months, which means that if you are still using them to host your website, you should be actively looking for a new web host right now. RAGE Web Hosting is a great fit for any iWeb user. It’s a great service, and great support is provided. I can guarantee that you won’t find another hosting company who can help with an iWeb related matter like RAGE Web Hosting can, so it’s well worth it to sign up with them.

If anyone has any questions or comments, feel free to let me know. Thanks for reading and stay tuned for more tutorials!

Making A Search Engine Friendly iWeb Website

16 Comments SEO for iWeb, Tips and Tricks

I mentioned in an earlier post about iWeb SEO Tool. I wanted to give you guys a bit more information on iWeb SEO Tool because I know a lot of you are scratching your heads trying to figure out exactly what it is. And for those of you who already know, but don’t use it, I put together this quick video that will give you a tour of iWeb SEO Tool. I hope you enjoy.

P.S. you can download iWeb SEO Tool for free from RAGE Software.

Here is the transcript of what was said in the video:

Many of you are familiar with iWeb SEO Tool and some of you even checked it out in the post I made earlier on, but I just wanted to put up this video for those who are still not sure about iWeb SEO Tool, or have just happened to stumble upon it for the first time.

So what is iWeb SEO Tool and who should use it? iWeb SEO Tool is free program from RAGE Software that allows users to make their iWeb sites optimized for search engines. Anyone building their website using iWeb who wants their site to rank higher in search engines should use this tool. That should be almost everyone! iWeb SEO Tool allows you to do things to your website that you cannot do in iWeb.

So let me give you a quick tour of iWeb SEO Tool. For more comprehensive tutorials, you can go to RAGE Software’s website which is

When you site is loaded in iWeb SEO Tool, you can select your web page files here on the left, and now you can edit certain things on your site that Google and other search engines consider when ranking websites.

In this first section called Site Settings, you can add code to the top, and bottom of your website’s code. This is for items such as analytical tools like Statcounter and Google Analytics. These codes don’t show up on your web page, but are working behind the scenes in the code. You can also add a Favicon to your site, which is this little icon you see in the address bar.

The Title Tag tab allows you to change the title tag, which is an extremely important part of SEO. Why is it important? Well take a look at this title tag here, which you can see at the very top of almost any web browser. This title tag also appears in a search result as the clickable link that takes the user to your website. iWeb’s default title tags usually leave the user with poor title tags that are not very helpful for SEO purposes.

The meta tags tab allows you to add keywords to your pages, as well as a description to your pages. Adding keywords is only somewhat important. Some search engines still rely on the meta keywords, while others don’t. The page descriptions are important as they are what shows up in a search result just under the title tag that we just discussed. This can be a good way to influence users to actually go to your website.

The images tab will allow you to add alternative text to your images. Since search engines are not able to see an image the same way a human can, giving words to your images is a good way to gain extra traffic through image search engines.

So that is the basics of iWeb SEO Tool that I wanted to show you guys. I really think this tool is extremely important and everyone should be using it. So head on over to and download a copy. It’s completely free to use so there’s no reason not to.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to leave them in the comments section and I’ll be happy to help.

Five Important Tips For All iWeb Users

16 Comments Tips and Tricks

When I look at iWeb from an experienced point of view, I see a very powerful and relatively easy to use website builder. When I think about the first time I began using iWeb, there are a few things that come to mind that I wish I had known, or at least could have been taught by someone. In this post, I want to share with you 5 really important iWeb tips that I feel every iWeb user NEEDS to know about. My perspective on the way a large majority of people use iWeb, or at least people who would be reading this blog, is for business purposes. Because of this, my tips are geared more toward someone using iWeb for business purposes, as opposed to for personal use.

Before I begin, I want to share one thought I have on iWeb’s current status. As most of you probably know by now, Apple has not been giving iWeb much attention over the last few months, and it does appear that Apple is most likely no longer going to develop iWeb further.

So what does this mean to you, the iWeb webmaster? Don’t panic. Continue using iWeb for the time being. There is no reason to jump ship at this point. As long as you still have iWeb on your computer, you will be able to continue using it as you normally would. When it is time to switch to something else (if ever) you will know. I don’t know how put that into words any further, but just trust me, you will know.

MobileMe on the other hand, is not something that is sticking around too much longer. That brings me to my first important tip that all iWeb users need to know.

1) MobileMe – Are you still using MobileMe to host your website? You at least have your own custom domain name, right? If you don’t have your own domain, or still use MobileMe to host your site, or both, then it’s time for a wake up call. Not only is MobileMe being discontinued, but it is also not an ideal host for a business website. You don’t actually tell your customers to visit your site at do you? Do you?

Anyone still using MobileMe to host their site should begin looking for an alternative hosting company. As mentioned before on this site, a good recommendation is RAGE Web Hosting – the only hosting company offering support to iWeb users.

2) We spoke about the ugly URL that we get with a MobileMe address, but have you ever stopped to see what the URL looks like when you publish to an FTP account through iWeb? When you publish to FTP from iWeb, your URL will look like this in a web browser

Now there is nothing wrong with this URL, however, there is a way to make the URL smaller, so that it looks like this

Doing this is easy, and it can be done by using any FTP client, including iWeb SEO Tool (we’ll talk more about iWeb SEO Tool later). It does require an extra step, but it’s definitely worth it if you want to make your URL cleaner. Whatever you end up choosing to have as your URL, just make sure you are consistent. Having your URL constantly change is not the best thing for search engines as it can be somewhat confusing.

You can watch this video tutorial to learn how to make your URL shorter.

So if you can avoid this, make sure you are using web-safe fonts. You can find these fonts by opening the Fonts window and selecting Web or Web-safe, whichever you have.

4) Contrary to popular belief, you can optimize an iWeb site for search engines. Every iWeb user who is not using iWeb for personal use, MUST, and I emphasize the word “must” because it is so important, use iWeb SEO Tool to optimize their website. iWeb SEO Tool is a free tool that allows you to make your iWeb website much more search engine friendly. Best of all, the tool is completely free.

There is also an accompanying video course that covers SEO for iWeb from start to finish, so I highly recommend this course to any SEO beginner, and even more advanced users looking to learn the proper ways of optimizing an iWeb site.

5) Social networking is a big part of our daily lives. Integrating social networking into your website is a must for any business. Luckily, iWeb makes it fairly easy to do this. You can watch the following tutorials to learn how to add a Google Plus button, and Facebook Like button to your iWeb website.

I hope you have enjoyed this post and have learned something new. Stay tuned for more helpful iWeb tips and tricks as
