Creating and Using Video Content in EverWeb

EverWeb has a great, updated Video Widget in version 1.9.5 that can be used to easily add video content to your website. Creating your own video content doesn’t have to be expensive or time consuming as apps such as iMove and Keynote are both free and easy to use. There’s also QuickTime Player, which comes with OS X, that lets you screen record video then edit it with some basic editing features.

In this example, we’re going to create a video tutorial about EverWeb’s hyperlinking feature using Quicktime. The video will include an audio track narrative. Once the video and audio have been created, we’ll insert it into a web page in EverWeb. OK, here we go…

Planning and Preparation

  1. Before creating a video tutorial, plan it’s flow from start to finish. Keep in mind what the goal is i.e. what do you want to tell your audience?
  2. Your tutorial should focus on one subject or idea only if at all possible e.g. how to hyperlink a piece of text to take you to another page in your website.
  3. Try a few ‘dry runs’ to make sure the tutorial flows properly before you start recording. Doing this also helps you get used to the steps you’ll be recording. It’s also a good point to double check that the video flow is as simple and straightforward as you had planned. Remove any unnecessary steps or anything not directly related to what your subject is about.
  4. Once you have rehearsed your tutorial, close any open applications on your desktop that are not needed in the recording.
  5. Set your OS X desktop background to a neutral color and clear away any files you have placed on the desktop. This will help keep your audience focused on the video content and not what’s in the background.
  6. When making screen recordings, you may want to increase the size of the mouse pointer so it’s easier to see and follow around the screen. You can change the mouse cursor size in ‘System Preferences’. Select ‘Accessibility’ and then ‘Display’. When recording, remember to move the mouse at a steady, even pace at all times. Avoid jerky mouse movements and don’t go too fast or too slow either!
  7. Once you have set up your recording environment, go to the point where you will begin the recoding. In our example, this is the page in our EverWeb Project file with the text that we want to hyperlink.

Recording Your Quicktime Movie
With all of the preparation done, it’s time to start recording…

  1. Open QuickTime Player. If it’s not in the Dock use Spotlight to search for it.
  2. Select File > New Screen Recording from the menu and follow the instructions that appear in the middle of the screen.
  3. When you have finished recording your video tutorial, press the record button in the menu bar in the top right hand corner of the screen to end the screen recording.
  4. Next, play your recording back to make sure that it’s how you want it. You may need to re-record a couple of times to get things right. Remember that if you need to re-record, you may need to reset things that have changed in the recording e.g. in the example of Hyperlinks, you would deselect ‘Enable as Hyperlink’. If you find that re-recording keeps going wrong, take a break and come back fresh to it later on.
  5. To add a narrative audio track to your video you’ll need a microphone. This is easily solved by using the microphone included with your mobile phone, such as the one on an iPhone. Plug the microphone in to your Mac. Remember to plan and test your audio track in the same manner as you did with your video track.
  6. Before starting the audio recording, make sure the video recording is at the start of playback. Also, moving the audio and video windows close to each other will make starting and stopping recording and playback easier.
  7. Select File > New Audio Recording. Begin the audio recording and then start the video playback immediately afterwards so that your narrative recording syncs up with the actions of the video recording. Once finished, turn off the audio recording and save the audio file.
  8. To combine the audio with the video, drag the audio recording file you have saved on to the window that contains the video recording.
  9. If the video is too long, use Edit > Trim to edit it down.
  10. To edit down the audio track, select Edit > Trim followed by View >  Show Audio Track. This will allow you access and edit the audio.
  11. When you have finished editing, save the video file. It will have a .MOV extension.

Adding Your Video Content in to EverWeb
With your video tutorial now complete, it’s time to add it in to your web page in EverWeb…

  1. Open your EverWeb Project file and go to the page where you want to add the video.
  2. From the Widgets Inspector, drag and drop the Video Widget on to your page. Position and resize the video placeholder as desired.
  3. In the Video Widget settings tab click the ‘Choose…’ button for ‘MP4 Video’ and select your .MOV video file. You’ll notice that there are two other file format options available: WebM and OGG. Use these options for compatibility purposes with older versions of Firefox and with Opera browsers. If you need to convert from Quicktime’s .MOV file format to WebM or OGG formats look for appropriate conversion programs on the Web.
  4. The updated Video Widget in EverWeb 1.9.5 has a variety of options for video content (see screenshot above.) Generally it’s recommended to go with the defaults most of the time unless you have specific reasons not to. For example, muting the sound is a good idea incase the video is accessed in a public area where you won’t want sound to upset people who may be nearby.

  6. It’s recommended to use the Poster Image option as the option places a picture at the front of the video whilst the video itself downloads in the background. It’s useful especially if the video is large and/or download speeds are slow to the device being used. Without a Video Poster Image the video needs to download first to supply an image. The other use of the Poster Image option is that you can easily make a title card for your tutorial, in our example, ‘Hyperlinking with EverWeb.’
  7. Remember that when using Video Poster Image it isn’t supported with Autoplay checked. You may want to advise your visitors that video downloads can be bandwidth hungry, especially from mobile devices before they hit ‘Play’ so they can choose to play the video or not.
  8. To see the results, use Preview in the EverWeb Toolbar before publishing to the Internet. Don’t forget that when you publish to the Internet to test your video content in different browsers to ensure video format compatibility.

All About Email in EverWeb

It’s estimated that there are over 2.6 billion email users in the world today having 4.4 billion email accounts that send and receive 205 billion emails every day!* The growth of email is expected to continue at about 3% annually over the coming years even in the face of growth from social media and instant messaging platforms.

Email will continue to be of importance and will remain a core requirement for business in the 21st Century. For website developers EverWeb includes email features and links in many parts of the product e.g. in the Contact Form, hyperlinks and the PayPal Widget to name a few instances. If you have an EverWeb+Hosting Plan, you can even add up to five email addresses directly from within the product. Each email address has a flexible file space quota that’s initially set to 250MB per email address. Managing some basic email tasks from within EverWeb is a convenient and simple way to work. If you need to access more advanced email admin options, you can access them in the EverWeb Client Area of your account. Let’s start with what you can do from within EverWeb itself before exploring the Client Area options.

Add an Email Address in EverWeb
You can easily add an email account directly from EverWeb:

  1. From within an EverWeb Project file select File-> Edit Publishing Settings or access the ‘Site Publishing Settings’ by double clicking on your Project file name in the Web Page List on the left hand side of the Project Window.
  2. Scroll down to the section ‘Email Addresses’. Click the ‘Add’ button to create a new email address.
  3. When creating a password for the email address make sure it’s strong otherwise you will have to add the email account again from scratch. The following should help you with how to make a strong password:
    • The password should be between 8 and 20 characters long
    • Use a combination of letters, numbers and ‘special’ characters but avoid using spaces
    • Remember to use capital letters as well as lowercase letters
    • Substitute letters with numbers or symbols e.g. use 3 for E,@ for A 5 for S and so on.
    • Avoid passwords that are easy to guess such as birthdays, names and passwords such as ‘password’.

    Deleting an Email Address
    To delete an email address again use the Site Publishing Settings as outlined above. Click on the email address you want to delete to select it before clicking the ‘Delete’ button. When you click to delete the email address you’re warned that doing so will remove all the email associated with that email address. Use the Delete option very carefully and make sure that you have made an offline email back up before starting the deletion process.

    Client Area Email Options
    EverWeb makes it easy to add and delete email accounts from within the product, but if you need more advanced options, your EverWeb Client Area is he place to go.

    Email Quotas
    By default the amount of space allocated to each email address is set at 250MB. As such you have one email address set up you have allocated it 250MB of space within you 2GB, or 10GB, EverWeb+Hosting plan you have chosen.

    You can adjust the ‘quota’ if you need to from within the Client Area:

    1. Log In to your EverWeb Client Area
    2. Select Services-> My Services from the menu or click on the ‘Services’ button
    3. On the ‘My Products & Services’ page double click on your ‘EverWeb+Hosting’ service.
    4. The next page is ‘Manage Product’ which is where you can administer your domain. Scroll down and click on ‘Email Accounts’ which is listed in the ‘Manage Account’ area. If you don’t see it check that you have selected the ‘Hosting Information’ tab and not the ‘Resource Usage’ tab.
    5. The next page is where you administer your email accounts including the email address quotas. Click on the second button, ‘Change Quota’, which is to the right of the email account. Change the quota then press ‘Save Changes’.

    Remember that you can decrease the quota as well as increase it. This may be useful if you have email addresses that are only lightly used. This helps save you quota file space that can be allocated to more heavily used email addresses.

    Changing Your Email Password
    If you need to change the password of an email address use the steps 1-5 as outlined above. For step 6 select the ‘Change Password’ button instead of the ‘Change Quota’ button. Remember to create a strong password as outlined above in the ‘Adding an Email Address…’ section.

    Checking Email Online from Within EverWeb

    1. From within your EverWeb Project, go to ‘Site Publishing Settings’
    2. In the email section click on the ‘Check Email Online’ button.
    3. You’ll be taken to your default browser and a new window will open in the Rage Software Webmail server.
    4. Enter the details of the email address and password that you want to access through the webmail Portal
    5. Next, you will be offered a choice of two email browsers if it’s the first time you have used webmail
    6. Select either Horde or Squirrel Mail as your default. In future when you access your webmail, you will be taken directly to your webmail client screen from the login page.
    7. Next click on the webmail service that you have chosen to access your email.
    8. Don’t forget to bookmark your webmail browser or webmail login window for quick access in future!

    Checking Email Online from Your EverWeb Client Area

    1. Log in to your Client Area account (
    2. Select Services -> My Services
    3. From the ‘My Products & Services’ page double click on the domain you want to access the email for.
    4. Scroll to the bottom of the ‘Manage Product’ page where you will find the ‘Log In To’ section. Select the ‘Webmail’ option. Note that if you select any ‘Manage Account’ options you will be able to ‘log In To’ your webmail using the option on the left hand side of the screen.
    5. Once you have accessed your webmail, it’s worth book marking the page in your browser so that you can directly open your webmail at any time.

    Forwarding Your Email
    There may be times where you need to forward email messages from one email account to another. To do this you can set up an ‘Email Forwarder’ in your EverWeb Client Area. This will forward a copy of an email sent to one email address to another email address that you have selected. To setup email forwarding:

    1. Follow the first four steps outlined above so that you are on the ‘Manage Products’ page.
    2. Select ‘Email Forwarders’
    3. Enter the email address you want to forward in the ‘Address to Forward’ dialog box. Your domain names are listed to the right after the ‘@‘ sign so make sure you select the correct one if you have more than one domain name in use.
    4. In the ‘Destination’ box enter the email address that the email will be forwarded to.
    5. Click on the ‘Add Forwarder’ button to finish. You will see the Email Forwarder listed below.
    6. To remove any forwarder, just click on the trash can icon beside the email forwarder you want to remove.
    7. EverWeb’s email admin functions are easy and quick to use both from within the product itself for a quick set up, or through the Client Area for more advanced options! As always, EverWeb makes this kind of thing a whole lot easier!

EverWeb 1.9.5 Now Available! Faster, More Efficient!

EverWeb’s just been updated to version 1.9.5 and the new release has many under the hood enhancements and tweaks to improve it’s speed and memory efficiency. If your website Project file has a lot of images, or is used for a large website, you should also see improvements in operation. Version 1.9.5 has also devoted a lot of attention to squashing bugs and issues.

This is a recommended update and comes in two versions, one for OS X 10.6 users and one for OS X 10.7 and later users. Updating your product is easy, just use the EverWeb -> Check for Update… menu.

Updated Video Widget
The Video Widget gets an overhaul adding some great new features:

  • Autoplay: Have your video play automatically when your page is loaded using the Autoplay option.
  • If you want continuous playback of your video, check the ‘Loop’ box.
  • Add/Remove Video Controls If you don’t want your visitors to access the video controls, you can hide them using this option
  • Poster Image. Use a Poster Image to add a default picture to the front of the video before your visitor clicks to play it. This feature can only be used when Autoplay is OFF
  • Volume Controls: You can set the default volume level of the video. If you want the video to play without any sound, use the Mute option

Remember that large videos may take a long time to load which makes the Poster Image a useful option. Don’t forget to test the page before going live to make sure that the page load time is acceptable!

Updated PayPal Widget
There’s one addition to the PayPal Widget in 1.9.5 and that’s the inclusion of a Global Shipping Settings option.

New Templates
And finally, there are three new templates: Cultivate, Food House and Gym Lite.

EverWeb’s Heading Tags Widget Explained!

EverWeb’s Heading Tags Widget was introduced in version 1.7. The Widget helps coders easily insert HTML Heading Tags into a web page. That sentence probably makes sense to those of you who have coding experience, but to non-coders out there it may not make much sense. It’s worthwhile exploring the widget in detail as it may help improve your SEO (Search Engine Optimisation), so bear with me…

What is a Heading Tag?
Before I get to answer that question, let’s put Heading Tags in context. When you develop your web pages in EverWeb, you just drag and drop the objects you want to use on to the page and customize them as you need to. When finished, you ‘Publish’ your website and your web pages are converted in to HTML (HyperText Markup Language) code and uploaded to the server that hosts your website.

The HTML code that’s generated is structured as HTML is a language and has rules and guidelines to follow just as any other language form has. The Heading Tag is an HTML ‘language’ element that can be used to explicitly add structure to the code generated by EverWeb. If you take this article as an example, it has a title at the top (‘EverWeb;s Heading Tags Explained’) and headings to break the content in to smaller more manageable parts (e.g. ‘What is a Heading Tag”). The headings could also have sub headings, or even sub-sub headings. If we want, we can explicitly make the titles and headings on our page in to specific HTML Headings using the Heading Tags Widget.

Six levels of Heading are allowed, ranging from the most important (called ‘H1’) to the least important (called ‘H6’). Following our above example we would use an H1 ‘tag’ for the title of our article ‘The Heading Tags Widget’ as it’s the most important heading on the page. The next level of heading, the section titles for the article (e.g. ‘What is a Heading Tag’) would be an H2 tag. Any subheadings would use an H3 Heading Tag and so on down to H6.

Why Use Heading Tags At All?
There are two good reasons for using Heading Tags: the first is that HTML tags can be useful for SEO as search engines can target the headings in the page using the tags you insert. Without the Heading Tags, search engines will just treat your headings as regular text. The second reason for using Heading Tags is to help structure your web page. This is especially useful for those who code in HTML, but less so for EverWeb users as it generates the code for you automatically at publish time.

How to Use the Heading Tags Widget
Probably the best way to use the Heading Tags Widget is to look at an existing page you’ve created and take the most important piece of text on the page and convert it into a Heading Tag. This will probably be the main heading or title on the page itself. To convert this text to a Heading Tag do the following:

  1. First drag and drop the Heading Tags Widget on to your page.
  2. Enter the text you want to use. In this case cut and paste the text e.g. the page title or most important heading on the page, in to the ‘Heading Text’ box.
  3. Next select the level of Heading Text. As this is the most important heading on the page, use H1.
  4. Align the text as you wish using the ‘Text Alignment’ drop down box.
  5. If you want the heading to use an HTML bold styling attribute tick the ‘Use Header Bold Styling’ box.
  6. Use the Fonts Panel to style the Heading Tags Widget text so that it recreates the look of your original page title, or heading, text.
  7. Once you finished creating the Heading Tags Widget, delete the original text title and replace it with the Widget.

Tips on Using the Heading Tags Widget

  1. Use Heading Tags sparingly. If you overuse them, search engines will notice and demote rather than promote your page!
  2. Have one H1 Heading Tag only on the page and some H2 level tags for your main headings. Use H3 tags for any subheadings. You really do not need much more tags than these.
  3. You can have more than one Level of tag on the page e.g. there is more than one heading in this article so I could use multiple H2 tags, one for each heading.
  4. Only use Heading Tags on pages that are important. You won’t need to use Heading Tags on pages such as Contact and About pages. Focus on the pages that are most important to put in front of your visitors.
  5. Don’t compromise your content for the sake of SEO. As with SEO it’s important to balance your visitor’s experience of your website against trying to improve your SEO page ranking result. And that’s especially true when using Heading Tags.

All You Need to Know About SEO in EverWeb

If you’ve used iWeb you’ll probably know that it didn’t have any in built SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) capabilities. If you use EverWeb you may think the same, but EverWeb does have SEO! It’s baked right in to the core of the product. There are different ways you can easily take advantage of EverWeb’s SEO capabilities and we’ll look at how you can apply SEO to your web pages in a moment, but first a reminder about SEO itself…

The Importance of SEO
SEO is important to include in your website because…

  1. It improves your website’s visibility to Internet search engines.
  2. When used properly it’s the best way to get the highest search engine ranking result for your website.
  3. Using effective SEO ‘Keywords’ makes it easier for search engine ’spiders’ to find your website’s pages

What to be aware of about SEO
SEO gets a lot of press and hype. But in reality…

  1. It doesn’t guarantee anything but can help improve your website’s visibility when properly used.
  2. It should be used only on the web pages you want to bring attention to. Using SEO on generic pages such as on ‘About’ and ‘Contact Us’ pages may be just wasting your time.
  3. Prioritize SEO on your Mobile pages. This is important as search engines, especially Google, increasingly give mobile search preference over desktop.
  4. There’s no magic involved in SEO, you just need to know how it works to get the best search result listing possible.

Choosing Your Keywords
When planning SEO for your website you’ll need a Keyword strategy…

  1. Research your Keywords. Choose words that help your website stand out from the rest. Think of words that are specific and targeted rather than general and generic. What makes your company, product, brand etc. different and unique? Use words that reflect this approach on each page you use SEO on e.g if you are selling books you could use the Keyword ‘metafiction’ (romantic irony) to be more specific, focused and specialist rather than using the generic word ‘books’.
  2. Use only a few, well chosen Keywords. Too many Keywords (known as ‘Keyword Stuffing’) will likely reduce the impact of your SEO. Google tends to penalise those who Keyword ‘stuff’ so avoid the practice all together. Finally, don’t forget that too many Keywords may have a negative impact on your visitor’s experience of your website. Always remember to balance SEO with your visitor’s experience.
  3. Use Keyword Planning tools to help research and select your Keywords e.g. Google Keyword Planner. See for more information. Keyword Planners help give you ideas about which Keywords to use and those not to use!

Add Keywords in EverWeb
Once you’ve researched the Keywords you want to use, add them in to the following fields in the Page Settings Tab in EverWeb…

  1. File Name: The file name of your web page can act as a Keyword.
  2. Navigation Menu Display Name: As this field links to other pages, it’s good to use for SEO as search engines look for links.
  3. Web Page Title: This field displays the text at the top of the browser window about the page. Add some Keywords in this field but don’t sacrifice your visitor’s experience for the sake of SEO.
  4. Web Page Description: This field is not used for SEO but is still a good place for including some Keywords. As always, don’t sacrifice the visitor experience for SEO.

Add SEO to Your Images
SEO can, and should, be applied to any image files your website uses. Give your image files a descriptive name as search engines look at file names as well as Keyword text. If possible, rename your image files before bringing them in to EverWeb. It’s more SEO efficient. If you’ve already imported your images in to EverWeb, rename them in the Assets Tab. It’s not as SEO efficient but it’s better than not doing it at all. To rename an image file double click on its name and type in a new descriptive name.

Keywords can also be used in the ‘Alt Text’ field in the Shape Options as this may be of some benefit in SEO. ‘Alt Text’ is used to describe an image when it cannot be displayed. Keep the ‘Alt Text’ description short, and if you can mention what the page is about in the description.

Keywords are easy to add to your web page with EverWeb when you know where to place them. The difficult, time consuming part is in researching the most effective Keywords that will give your web pages the best listing in search engine results.
