Publishing From iWeb – Multiple Methods

Now that most users have made the switch from MobileMe to another web host, I wanted to address a topic that has come up quite often, and has led to some users experiencing a few issues here and there.

iWeb users who use iWeb 09 (most recent version of iWeb) are able to publish their websites straight from iWeb to their new FTP server. This makes it relatively easy for these users to publish their site.

I will mention one issue that some of these users experience. There is a small bug in iWeb which allows users to add files such as images, with spaces at the front of the file name. Publishing these images to MobileMe was not a problem, but iWeb does not allow some of these files with a space at the beginning of the file name to be published to FTP. Because of this, users usually end up with an error message that reads “There was an error communicating with the FTP server. Try again later, or check with your service provider.”

RAGE Software, creators of the popular iWeb SEO Tool, have come up with this tutorial to show users who receive this message an alternate way of publishing their websites.

iWeb users who have an older version of iWeb do not have the publish to FTP option. Users who are stuck in this boat will need to publish their sites iWeb to a local folder on their hard drive, and then use an FTP client to publish their site to their server. Here are two tutorials showing you how to accomplish this. The first tutorial shows you how to publish it with iWeb SEO Tool and the second tutorial shows you how to publish it using an FTP client (CyberDuck). Keep in mind, these tutorials were created by RAGE Web Hosting, so the FTP information used is specific for RAGE Web Hosting, but the principles apply to almost any web host.
