We spend a lot of time every day reading on our phones and computers, whether it’s news, or other content of interest to us. How much of the content that you consume is littered with spelling mistakes? What about your own EverWeb made website? Does it also contain spelling mistakes, and if so, what’s the impact of it, and what should you do? Find out below!
How Bad Spelling Impacts Your Website
The odd typo or misspelling is usually something we can all put up with, but when a site’s pages has a lot of mistakes it can have the following consequences…
- Loss of Credibility and Trust: Poor spelling can undermine the credibility of a website or content creator. Users may question the professionalism, accuracy, or trustworthiness of information if it contains noticeable spelling errors.
- Impacts the User Experience: Spelling mistakes can disrupt the flow of reading and make content harder to understand. This can lead to frustration and reduce the overall quality of the user experience.
- Impact on Your Site’s SEO: Search engines, particularly Google, penalize content with frequent spelling errors, as it can be interpreted as low-quality. This can negatively affect a website’s ranking in search results.
- Clarity of Communication: Spelling errors can lead to misunderstandings, especially when they change the meaning of a word or sentence. This can be particularly problematic in instructional or technical content.
- Perception of Effort and Quality: Consistent spelling errors may suggest a lack of effort or attention to detail, which can affect how seriously readers take the content. It might give the impression that the content was hastily put together or that the author is not knowledgeable.
- Impact on Visitor Engagement: Content with bad spelling is less likely to be shared or engaged with on social media or other platforms. Readers may be less inclined to recommend or trust content that seems unprofessional.
- Affects Your Brand Image: For businesses, spelling errors can harm brand image, making them appear less competent or less reliable. This is particularly crucial in marketing, customer communication, and e-commerce.
- Accessibility: For non-native speakers or those with learning disabilities, spelling errors can make content more difficult to read and understand, thus reducing its accessibility.
How To Get Perfect Spelling in Your Website
You can easily improve the spelling and grammar of the pages in your EverWeb made site. There are usually two scenarios…
- Manually Entering Text In To Your Site: The second way of getting text in to the pages of your site is just to type it in manually in to the pages of your site. This could be on a regular page in your site using a TextBox, a blog post or within a widget.
- Your Text Comes From an External Source: Some EverWeb users will pull text in from external sources. This can be from other sites or from word processed documents, AI sources and even from sources such as Slack or X. If you’re bringing in text from a word processed document, it’s likely that it will have been automatically spellchecked already if you’ve kept your document spell checker on at all times. If you’re taking text from other sources, you may want to run a spelling check on the text you have pulled in to your site. There’s no guarantee that the source text has already been spellchecked.
In either scenario having spell checking tools active could still benefit you.
Check Spelling Whilst Typing
In the first scenario above, where you’re manually entering text, you may want to turn on the EverWeb’s on the fly spell checking via the Edit-> Spelling -> Check Spelling While Typing menu option. Any mistake will be that the spell checker thinks you’ve made will be underlined for you to correct. If you need help with the correction, you can use the Edit-> Spelling-> Show Spelling dialog box to find the correct spelling.
Check Document Now
The second option you have is to use the Edit-> Spelling-> Check Document Now option. This is probably the easiest option to use when you have pasted in text from another source. Use Check Document Now to sweep through your page and correct all spelling mistakes at one time. It’s great for both scenarios, you just need to remember to check the page once you’ve finished your text input! You may also want to use this option in conjunction with the Show Spelling option…
Show Spelling…
This dialog box shows you the possibilities available for a misspelled word. You can show, or hide, the dialog box as and when you need to by toggling the Edit-> Spelling-> Show Spelling… menu option. When using Show Spelling… any misspelled word will be underlined and suggested replacements will appear in the dialog box.
Using Your Operating System’s Spell Checking Tools
Both Mac and Windows both include ways to spell check words. Usually you can find these just by highlighting a word then right, or secondary clicking on the word. Depending on your OS you will either get a list of alternative words, or you will be able to access in-built spelling and grammar options. These options are great to consider when spell checking text within widgets and blog posts.
Both EverWeb and your operating system offer you easy, simple and quick ways to spell check your website’s pages so you can avoid negative impacts on your site and improve your SEO at the same time!
