The Projects Window in EverWeb serves as a centralized hub for organizing, managing, and accessing your website projects. As an easy-to-use website-building platform tailored for Mac and Windows users, EverWeb offers this feature to streamline workflow, especially when juggling multiple projects. Let’s dive into what makes the Projects Window so effective and how you can leverage it for efficient project management.
What is the Projects Window?
When you launch EverWeb, the Projects Window is the first screen you see. It’s essentially a dashboard that displays all your EverWeb website projects in one convenient place, helping you open, create, or manage your websites with ease. This makes it simple to get started on a new project or pick up where you left off on an existing one.
Key EverWeb Projects Window Features
The Projects Window has the following features:
- Project Organization: The Projects Window shows all of your website projects in a list, making it easy to locate specific ones. Each project is identified by its name. For those working with multiple websites, you can arrange the list either by the date the project was last opened or in alphabetical order. To change the sort order of your projects, just click on the up/down arrow symbol to the right of the ‘Recent Projects’ label at the top of the projects list,
- Easy Project Access: The layout of the Projects Window allows for easy access to any project located in EverWeb’s default project storage folder on your hard disk. Just double-click on the project name to open it in EverWeb’s Editor Window. This minimizes the time it takes to dive into work, especially if you switch between projects frequently.
If your projects are located in a different folder to EverWeb’s default Project file location, you can easily access these by using the File-> Open menu option. Navigate to the location where you have stored your project files. If you are on a Mac, you can double click on the project file name to open it. If you are on Windows, click on the Project’s folder to select it, then click on the ‘Open Project’ button to open it. - Creating New Projects: Starting a new project is straightforward. At the bottom of the Projects Window, you will see a button on the left hand side to create a new project. This leads you to EverWeb’s Theme Template Chooser, where you can either select a pre-designed template or begin with a blank canvas. This feature is a huge time-saver, letting you set up a new project within seconds.
- Backup and Restore Functions: Accidents can happen, and sometimes files can become corrupted or get deleted. Thankfully, EverWeb’s Projects Window includes a backup and restore function. You can easily create backups of each project, on the fly, by clicking on the Settings button to the right of the project file that you want to back up. From the list of options, choose ‘Make Backup…’
If you need to restore a Project file from backup, click on the Settings button of the Project file that you want to restore, then choose the ‘Restore from backup…’ option and follow the prompts.
To ensure that you’ll never be at risk of losing important work, we strongly recommend that you set up a regular backup schedule by using the EverWeb-> Settings-> Backup tab on a Mac. For Windows users, first open any project, then go to the Edit-> Options-> Backup option to create your backup schedule. We encourage you to include the EverWeb Project directory in to your computer’s backup schedule for extra security. - Project Management Options: The Projects Window also offers options to duplicate or delete project files. Start by clicking on the Settings button next to the Project you want to duplicate or delete. Select the appropriate option from the menu. For example, use the Duplicate… option if you need to create a similar website or a staging environment, which is an efficient way to do this.
If you delete a project file, it will be placed in the Trashcan, including any backups that have been created for the project, so be careful when using this option. If you decide that you have deleted the project by mistake, move the Project out of the Trashcan. Usually we would recommend putting the project file back in to EverWeb’s default project file location. If you do this, close the Project Window then reopen it to refresh the Projects in the Projects Window. If you move the file to another location, use the File-> Open… menu option to open the Project.
Project Files In Non-Default Locations
By default, EverWeb stores your project files in a default file location. You can always see where your Project file is located using by clicking on its Settings button in the Projects Window then selecting the ‘Show On Disk…’ option. This may be useful to know if you want to set this folder location as a backup for your computer’s backup schedule, in addition to using EverWeb’s own backup schedule (see above.)
You may also want to use the ‘Show On Disk…’ menu option if you want to move the project file to another location, such as a network drive. If you do this, on a Mac just cut and paste the ‘.everweb’ project file to the location where you want it. For Windows, cut and paste the project file’s folder to its new location.
If you move a project file out of EverWeb’s default location, make sure that you close and reopen the Projects Window. You will see that the project file has been removed from the list of projects. To access the project again, use the File-> Open menu option and navigate to the Project file’s location and open it as per the instructions above. If you move a Project file back in to EverWeb’s default folder location, don’t forget to close and reopen the Projects Window to refresh the Projects List.
Other Projects Window Features
In addition to the features outlined above, you also have a button to take you to EverWeb’s video tutorials as well as a link to the EverWeb User Manual for the version of EverWeb you are running in the bottom left hand corner of the Projects Window.
Getting Back To The Projects Window
If you are currently in a project file’s Editoe Window and need to get back to the Projects Window, simply go to the File-> Projects Window… menu option. This will open the Projects Window for you to use.
