EverWeb 4.3 Launches ALL NEW PayPal Modern Widget for Purchases and Subscriptions!

One of the exciting new features of EverWeb 4.3 for Mac and Windows is the introduction of the all new PayPal Modern Widget.

The PayPal Widget Vs. The PayPal Modern Widget
The new PayPal Modern widget differs in many respects to its companion PayPal widget which was introduced in EverWeb version 1.3. The first thing to note in EverWeb 4.3 is that the PayPal widget has been renamed in its Widget Settings to ‘PayPal Legacy Widget’. This seems to imply that it may not be developed further in the future. Conversely, this may also mean that the new PayPal Modern widget is the way of the future. It will be interesting to see how the new widget develops in the future.

The second point of interest is that the new widget is based on using a PayPal Client ID instead of an email address as in the original Paypal widget. The use of a PayPal Client ID means that the new Modern widget can be used for either purchases or subscriptions.

The third differentiator between the widgets is that the new widget allows you to choose the payment providers that you wish to use in the Widget Settings. For example, you can use Venom in the US and UK and PayPal’s Pay Later option and local payment providers in the EU such as Ideal in The Netherlands and MUltibanco in Portugal and EPS in Australia. Check the full list in the Payment Sources list in the widget’s Widget Settings.

Many of the Features of the two widgets remain the same however, so if you’re familiar with the original Paypal widget you’ll be at home with the new PayPal Modern widget.

PayPal Modern Widget Basics
The new PayPal Modern widget is a fixed width widget like the original PatPal widget. You can, therefore, easily add the widget to a fixed width page layout such as the Center Aligned page layout. Just by drag and drop the widget where you want on your page. If you’re using a Responsive page, you’ll need to add it in to a Responsive Row widget as a fixed width object.

To use the PayPal Modern widget, you’ll first need to set up a PayPal Client ID if you don’t already have one. The original PayPal widget uses the email address associated with your PayPal account. In the PayPal Modern Widget, the PayPal Client ID enables the use the PayPal button API. This API enables more options for you such as the ability to create subscriptions and the ability to offer different payment methods to your customers.

Creating Your PayPal Client ID
Once you have a PayPal account, you can start working with the PayPal Modern widget. Note that you may be required to log in to your PayPal account at various stages when creating PayPal Plan or Subscription ID’s.

EverWeb makes it easy to create your own PayPal Client ID from within the PayPal Modern widget. Simply click on the ‘Get Client ID…’ button in the Widget Settings, and follow th instructions in PayPal itself. Once PayPal has created the Client ID for you, copy and paste it in to the PayPal Client ID field in the PayPal Modern widget’s Widget Settings.

Creating a PayPal Subscription ID
If you plan on creating subscriptions in PayPal, you should also create a Subscription Plan ID using the ‘Create Subscription Plan ID…’ button. This will create a subscription plan ID for you as well as guiding you through creating a subscription service. Once you have your Subscription Plan ID, copy and paste it in to the Plan ID field in the Widget Settings.

After you have created your Client ID and, optionally, your Subscription ID, set the Button Type field appropriately as either Purchase or Subscription.

Completing The Widget Settings Product Details…
Once you have finished with creating the ID’s that you need to use the widget, follow the rest of the widget’s Widget Settings to complete your purchase or subscription. If you’re familiar with the original PayPal widget, these fields nd settings will be familiar to you…

When using these shipping options you will set them up first in PayPal itself.

Id setting up a discount you can choose to either use a percentage of the product price, or as a fixed amount.

The Action Section
The last section of widget settings is the Actions section where you can redirect your customers to a ‘Thank You Page’ or to a ‘Cancelled Page’ in your site when the customer has completed or cancelled their purchase.

Check in PayOak that you have set up in PayPal to redirect back to your website after the customer purchase. Log in to PayPal then go to your PayPal Account Settings. Go to the Website Payments option, and check that the Website Preferences are set to ‘bring customers back to my website after they pay with PayPal’.

Testing the PayPal Modern Widget
After you have finished adding the settings that you require, preview or publish your site. If Preview does not work you may need to publish your site instead to test. In this case, create a test page with the PayPal Modern widget on it, that’s not visible to your customers. Once you’re happy that the widget works as you expect, integrate the widget in the live page that you want it to appear upon.
