Organizing Your EverWeb Project File Assets: All You Need To Know!

In our last two posts, we’ve looked at the assets that you use in your EverWeb website project file, how to use them effectively and efficiently as well as how to use EverWeb’s Asset Management tools to work smart with them when building your website. In our final post on Assets, we take a look at organizing your assets within your project file.

The Key To Organization is Preparation
In our first post on Assets in EverWeb we made the point that it is best to name your image files as something you can easily identify before you add them in to your EverWeb site. This is good for your SEO, and it also helps you save time if you are looking for a particular image file you will more easily be able to find what you are looking for if your image files will be named appropriately. As such, preparing your image files will save you time and effort in the future, especially if your website uses a large number of images. If you have already imported your images in to EverWeb before renaming them, it’s best to reimport them if you can with their new names. Remember to delete the ‘original’ image files that you added in to the Assets list after importing the properly named files. If you can’t do this, or it’s not practical to do so, you can rename your image assets in the Assets list. Just double click on the image file you want to rename, enter the new name, then press Enter to finish. This is a half-way option as it’s not the best for your SEO as the renamed file name will be more of an alias than its true underlying name.

If you have named your files properly, it will also make finding them easier using either the search box at the top of the Assets list or by using predictive search e.g. if I have a file called ‘sailingboat.jpg’ I would just start typing the name on the keyboard when I have the Assets tab open. EverWeb will match what I’m typing to take me quickly to the file I require.

Simple Organisation
If you don’t have many images in your project, organizing them will be easy. You can use the settings cog to sort your files in to the order you want as well displaying more of less information about each file using toggling the ‘Show File Info’ option on.

Using Folders for Organizing Assets
If you have a lot of assets you may prefer to organize them either by a particular theme. For a photographer this could be the date that the photo was taken. You could also group images by the page on which you use the image on in your website. You may want to put your company logo and other images related to your branding in one particular folder. The possibilities are almost endless.

EverWeb makes this type of organization easy by letting you use folders to organize your images. If you want you can also create folders within folders to give you additional structure to the organization of your images.

To create a folder, just go to the Assets tab then click on the ‘+’ icon to the right of the assets search bar.You will br asked to enter a name for the folder. After entering the name you want to use, the empty folder will at the top of the Assets list. You can now drag and drop images from the assets list in to the folder.

To create a sub folder, simply click on the folder you want to add a sub folder too then use the ‘+’ icon again to create the sub folder. Alternatively, you can also right, or secondary, click on the folder you want to add a sub folder to, then choose the Add Folder.

If you want to create a folder of all the assets of the page you are currently on you can easily do this as well. First go to the page whose image assets you want to group in to a folder. Next, click on the Assets tab, and then click on the Settings Vog. Select the option to ‘Select All Assets on Current Page’. The image files used on the current page will be highlighted. Right, or secondary, click on one of the highlighted assets and choose the ‘Add To Folder’ option. Again, name the new folder that you want to create and press Enter to finish. The selected image files will be added in to the new folder.

Working with Asset Folders
Just like the file system of your OS, using EverWeb’s Assets Folders is easy. Just drag and drop image files in to the folders you want them in. Remember that you can select multiple files at one time in the assets list and move them en-masse if you want.

If you have subfolders you can also move these outside of the parent folder if you want, giving you great flexibility in your asset organization.

If you want to remove a folder at any time, simply highlight the folder you want to delete then right, or secondary, click on it. Next choose the ‘Delete…’ option. Alternatively, click on the folder you want to delete then click on the ‘-‘ icon in the assets toolbar. Now you will be asked if you want to delete only the folder, or the folder and its contents. If you choose the first option, the contents will be placed back in to the assets list when the folder is deleted.

EverWeb makes it easy to organize the files in your assets list as you want to which is a great plus especially when you are working with a large number of image asset in your project.
