EverWeb’s Web Page List: All You Need To Know – Part II, Advanced Features

In the first part of this post on EverWeb‘s Web Page List we looked at its basic functionality. Here, in the second part of the post, we’re going to look at some of the Web Page List’s more advanced features. We’ll also cover some of the topics that we looked at in Part I but in more detail…

Icons Used In The Web Page List
Let’s begin by looking at the different icons that you’ll encounter in the Web Page List! When you create a page, it will be displayed in the Web Page List with a page icon. If you create a directory it will have a folder icon. One other icon is also on display and that is the one next to the project file name. If you’re publishing to EverWeb or FTP Server, you’ll see the icon as a Globe. If you’re publishing to Folder, the icon will be a Folder. If you click on the project file name, you’ll see you project’s Site Publishing Settings. In the Publishing Settings you will see the field ‘Publish To’. If you click on the dropdown menu, you’ll see the EverWeb, FTP and Folder options. Choose the option to suit your publishing situation.

Project File and Page Names
When you create new project file, you’ll see that it’s called ‘NEW WEBSITE’. You can change this as you want, either by using the menu File=> Rename Website option, or by double clicking on the project file name in the Web Page List. Type in the new name then press Enter when finished.

As we explained in Part I of this post, renaming pages and Master pages is done in the same way as for the project itself. If you prefer though, you can also use the File-> Rename menu option to rename pages, but it’s a bit slower if you do it that way.

Searching For The Page You Want
If you have a large number of pages in your site, you might find the Page Search function useful,It’s located at the bottom of the web Page list. Simply enter part, or all, of the name of the page you want to find then press Enter. When using the Page Search feature, EverWeb will search all pages in the Web Page List including in any folders that you may have created. It does not matter if the folders are open or closed either. If the page you are searching for is in a closed folder, EverWeb will automatically open the folder to display the page you are looking for. Again this can be a great time saver!

Previous and Next Page History
To the left of the Page Search box are a Previous and Next button. Use these buttons when you want to track back, of forwards, the pages that you have visited in your current EverWeb session. This ‘trail’ may be useful to you if you have done something on a page that you want to repeat on another page, but can’t remember the original page you did it on.

Adding, Moving and Deleting Pages
Adding and deleting pages from the Web Page List is straightforward, but there are a few ways to do these functions. Let’s take adding a page first… You can either click on the Add Page button to add a regular page, or click on the ‘new Master Page’ to add a new Master page. In both instances you will then seethe Theme Template Chooser where you can choose the theme and page style that you want. You can also add a new page by right, or secondary, mouse clicking whilst the mouse is over a blank area within the Web Page List. You’ll see a popup with one option ‘New Page’.

If you secondary, or right, click on a page in the Web Page Lit, you will also see a new Page. option on the expanded list of options. Further down this list, you will see the Delete Page option. If you click on this, you will see a warning dialog box asking you to confirm the deletion. Whilst you can choose not to show this dialog box in future, our recommendation is to always keep this deletion confirmation warning on. The alternative way to delete a page in the Web Page List is to select the page then press the backspace key. Again, you will see a dialog box asking you to confirm the deletion.

Moving pages in the Web Page List works as you would expect. Simply drag and drop the page from its current location to its new location then drop it in place. Remember as well that when you move pages around in the Web Page List, this will affect the Navigation Menu widget.

When it comes to moving pages in to and out of directories things are a little different. When moving a page in to a directory, drag the page a little under and to the right of the directory. You’ll see a guide line to help you. The reverse is true when you want to move a page out of a directory.

EverWeb even allows you to move pages between the regular and Master page sections of the Web Page List. Just drag and drop the pages between the two sections as you need to. When you do so, EverWeb will create a copy of the page so you may need to delete the original page that you were dragging after dropping it in place in its new section.

Extending beyond drag and dropping pages between the regular and Master page sections, you can also drag and drop pages from one project’s Web Page List in to another Project’s Web page list. Open both projects and drag the page you want to copy from the source project file in to the Web Page List of the Target project file. The only thing you need to make sure of here is that the page your dragging does not have the same name as one in the target project file. As such before you start dragging and dropping, check the names of the pages in the target project file!

In part three of our Web Page List tour, we’ll continue with out look at more of its advanced options!
