With the introduction of EverWeb 4.2 for macOS and Windows, comes a much requested feature – the ability to copy objects and pages between project files. As you would expect EverWeb makes this easy to do!
Setting Up Your Project Files
The first step you should take is to open the EverWeb project files that you want to copy from and to. This is easy and there are a number of ways to do this…
- Use EverWeb’s Project Window: The Projects Window is the first window that you see when you open EverWeb. Double click on the project file that you want to copy from the Recent Projects list. Once the project file has opened, move it to one side so that the Projects Window is visible again. Now double click on the second project file which will be the one you will be copying to.
If you find at any time that you cannot see the Projects Window, click on the project file that you have just opened, then select the File-> Projects Window… menu option. The Projects Window should come to the front of the screen.
- Use the File-> Open Recent menu option: This is a useful option if you have recently opened the project files that you want to copy to or from. You can use this command from the Projects Window ir within an open project file. Simply select File-> Open Recent… menu option then select the first project file that you want to use. Repeat the process again to open the second project file that you want to use.
- Use the File-> Open… menu option. If you store your projects in locations other than EverWeb’s default location, use this menu command to directly go to the folder location of the project files that you want to use.
Organizing Your Project Files on Screen
After opening the two project files that you want to copy between, it’s probably best to display them side by side on screen, or overlapping each other with the copying from Project file on top and the copying to project file underneath. The important thing here is to make sure that you can see the Web Page List of both project files. This may mean resizing each project file on screen so that you can see enough of both of them. If you lose sight of either of the project files that you have opened, just use the Window menu option to select the project file(s) that you cannot see.
Copying Pages between Projects
To copy a page from one project file to another, simply drag the page that you want from the Web Page List of the one project in to the Web Page List of the other project. Note that the page will not copy over from the source project file to the target project file if the name of the source page already exists in the target project file. In this case, change the name of the page in the target project file so it is different to the name of the page being copied over.
Copying Master Pages Over Between Projects
You can also copy Master Pages between project files, but this requires a particular method. Start by selecting the project file which contains the Master Page that you want to copy. Next drag and drop the Master Page you want to copy from the Master Page section of the Web Page List in to the Regular Page List. This will make a copy of the Master Page in the regular Web Page List section. Now drag and drop the copied page in to the Master Page section of the target project file. After the page has been copied over, delete the Master page copy in the source project file.
Copying Objects Between Project Files
In addition to copying pages over from one project file to another, EverWeb now also lets you copy over objects within pages from one project file to another. For example, you may have a responsive Image Gallery in one project file that you would like to use in another project file. To use this feature, first select the object you want to copy, in this example a Responsive Image Gallery widget. Next use your operating systems Copy command (Command+C on a Mac and Ctrl+C on Windows) to copy the object to the Clipboard. Once the object has been copied to the Clipboard, go to your target page in the other project file and use the Paste shortcut commands (Command+V on a Mac and Ctrl+V on Windows) to paste the object in to the page. When you paste an object, associated objects linked with it will also be copied over. In our example, the images files associated with the Responsive Image Gallery will be copied over in to the Assets List in the target project.
Copying pages and objects from one EverWeb Project file to another has been something that some users have been wanting for a long time so its great to see it now in action!
