EverWeb 4.0’s NEW Paragraph Styles Makes Styling Your Site Easier Than Ever!

In our last blog post we looked at how you can set up default styles for your EverWeb made website. The new EverWeb 4.0 Paragraph Styles, Preferred Fonts and Document Colors features make setting up your site’s defaults a breeze. In this post, we’re going to take a look at how you use Paragraph Styles and all of its great new features!

Introducing EverWeb’s New Text Inspector!
Let’s start by looking at the new Text Inspector that comes with EverWeb 4.0. It’s been redesigned to resemble the text formatting dialog boxes that you see in word processing apps such as Apple Pages. Prior to EverWeb 4.0 you would have to use the Fonts button to select the font that you wanted to use for your text. Now with EverWeb 4.0 you can select your text font, font weight, font size and font styling all in one place. In addition to being able to click on Bold, Italic and Underline, you now have the option for Strikethrough also easily to hand.

The text alignment options have also been separated out and are now more prominent, sitting directly below the new Fonts section.

Sitting above the Fonts section, is the new Paragraph Styles section.

Using Paragraph Styles
If you followed our previous post, you will have already set up the Paragraph Styles that you want to use for your website. If you haven’t done so already, or want to add Paragraph Styles to an existing project, that’s no problem either. We’ll cover that below as well! If you already have your Paragraph Styles set up, just select the text you want to apply the Paragraph Style too then click on the down arrow at the top right of the Text Inspector. This will display the list of Paragraph Styles that have been set up. Just click on the style that you want to apply to your selected text.
If you decide to change e.g. the font size of some text that already has a Paragraph Style associated with it, you will see an ‘Update’ box appear next to the Paragraph Style. If you click on the ‘Update’ button, the Paragraph Style will be updated. So, if at anytime, you change any attribute of a Paragraph Style, the change will be applied to any text that uses the Paragraph Style. This in itself really speeds things up when you are overhauling your site with a new look! If you don’t want to update the Paragraph Style, just ignore the ‘Update’ button.

Adding Paragraph Styles
You can easily add a new Paragraph Style to your project file. This is especially useful when you want to create a new Paragraph Style based on the attributes of text that you have already selected. Start by opening the Paragraph Styles menu then click on the ‘+’ button to the right of the words ‘Paragraph Styles’. Enter the name that you want to call the Paragraph Style in the dialog box at the bottom of the list of Paragraph Styles. Press Enter to finish. The new Paragraph Style will adopt the attributes of the currently selected text.

Managing Paragraph Styles
Any Paragraph Style can be updated ‘on the fly’ as well as via the Format-> Default Styles… menu option. To update your Paragraph Style, click on the ellipses in a circle icon to the right of the Paragraph Style you want to change. For Windows users, the icon is a downward facing arrow. Click on the icon and a sub-menu of options will appear. You can now delete the style, rename the style of update the style based on the currently selected text. If you delete a Paragraph Style that’s in use in your site, you will be asked to replace it with another Paragraph Style.

To change the order that Paragraph Styles are listed, you will need to do this from the Format-> Default Styles… menu.

Paragraph Styles in The Styled Text Editor and in Blog Posts
In addition to Paragraph Styles appearing in the Text Inspector, you will also find them in the Styled Text Editor that is used in widgets such as the FlexBox and Text Section widgets. In the Styled Text Editor, Paragraph Styles appear at the top of the set editor dialog box.
If your site also has a blog, you can use Paragraph Styles for your posts. Just select the text you want, then click on the Paragraph Styles button in the Toolbar to see the list of Paragraph Styles.
When using Paragraph Styles in either the Styled Text Editor or the Blog Post Editor, you won’t be able to update, delete or rename the styles. You will need to so this either using the Format-> Default Styles… menu option or via the Text Inspector functions.

Existing EverWeb Project Files
As you would expect, if you have already created a website project file before EverWeb 4.0, you will need to go through your site’s TextBoxes, widget’s and blog posts to apply Paragraph Styling. This is, fortunately, something that you will only need to do once. After applying Paragraph Styling to your site, you’ll be able to easily update any text styling in the future!
